GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PRACTICE OF YOGASANAS

Asanas and physical exercises should not be combined. Asanas are to be performed either in the mornings or evenings; perform the Asanas when the stomach is empty. In morning hours, perform Asanas after clearing bowels. Allow half-an-hour time between Asanas and bath. While performing Asanas, make a special note to breath in a slow manner when you are lifting or bending the legs, trunk, hands upwards and breath-out in a slow manner when bending downwards. But breathing should be normal when one reaches and stays in the final posture of the Asana. Keep your eyes closed and observe the breathing alone.

Avoid use of tobacco in any form. Take satvic food (vegetables, greens, fruits, etc.) and avoid meat. Drink milk instead of stimulating drinks i.e., Coffee and Tea etc. After yogic practice, take liquids only after 15 minutes and solid food after a stonach and water for the quarter part of the stomach and remaining quarter part of the stomach be kept empty. This will keep you healthy and fit. Spices, chillies and tamarind should be avoided, if possible. Other wise minimize to the least advance in practice one should take rock salt. In case of sea salt, use the minimum quantity. Take milk, butter, butter-milk, greens, vegetables and fruits daily which will enable the regular movements of bowels.

After Yogasana one should feel relaxed, never tired of sweating. Daily practices help fast progress.

Yogic practitioners should avoid running, jumping and speaking in a high tone. If one gets sensation to attend call of nature, coughing, sneezing, etc., one should come back to the normal position and clear the. Women should not practice Asanas during menstrual period and during pregnancy. Practice regularly for four months before you take up the practice of Pranayama.

NADI SUDHI AND PRANAYAMA

Pranayama is divided into three parts:

1. Filling – Inhaling – Puraka
2. Restraining – Holding – Kumbaka
3. Emptying – Exhaling – Rechaka

Practice Nadi Suddhi for three or four months in the early morning and evening.

Then start the practice of Pranayama. Close the left nostril with little finger of your right hand, slowly draw in the breath through right nostril, hold the breath in the lungs comfortable for a fixed duration and then close the right nostril with the thumb and let the breath out through left nostril. This makes one Pranayama. Then inhale slowly through the same (left nostril) closing the right nostril with the thumb hold the breath and then exhale through the right nostril closing the left nostril with the little and ring finger.

Lightness of body, clear complexion hearing of Nada, calmness of the mind and body and a beautiful voice are the signs of your progress in Yoga.

NADI FLOW

Breath flows through the right nostril (Suriya Nadi) on Sundays, Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Breath flows through left nostril (Chandra Nadi) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Breath flows through the right nostril during waning moon days of the moon and through left nostril during waxing days of moon on Thursdays.

The practitioners practicing Poorana Nadi Suddhi once a day should commence and complete nadi purification through the appropriate nostrils as mentioned above. Those practicing twice daily should commence and complete through the right nostril in the morning and through the left nostril in the evening.

POORNA NADI SUDDHI (Through the Right Nostril)

Procedure

1.
Sit in a suitable posture.
2.
Perform Achamana and pray to your Guru and Deity for their blessings.
3.
Concentrate your mind at the tip of the nose
4.
Close your left nostril with the ring finger of the right hand.
5.
Breathe out slowly chanting “OM”, “OM”, “OM” three times mentally and through the same nostril breathe in chanting “OM” three times mentally.
6.
Now close your right nostril with the thumb of the right hand.
7.
Exhale slowly through the left nostril chanting “OM” three times mentally and inhale through the same nostril chanting “OM” thrice mentally.
8.
Now rest your left hand on the left knee and fold the little finger to indicate the first count.
9.
Repeat the above for four times and final one through the right nostril.
10.
Close the left nostril and exhale through the right nostril “OM “, “OM”, “OM mentally and inhale through the right nostril chanting “OM” and exhale the breath through left nostril chanting “OM”.
11.
Inhale through the left nostril chanting “OM” closing the right nostril and exhale through the right nostril chanting “OM” closing the left nostril. Perform this exercise five times and five Nadi Suddhi Prayanama are performed.

Meditate either at the tip of the nose or at the Trukuti the space in between the eyebrows for five minutes. The whole exercise may take about twenty to twenty five minutes.

POORNA NADI SUDDHI (Through the Left Nostril)

Procedure:

Perform the above from 1 to 10 but commencing through the left nostril and final nadi suddhi through the left nostril.

POORANA NADI SUDDHI KUMBAKA PRANAYAMA (Through the Right Nostril)

Procedure:

1.
Sit in a suitable posture.
2.
Perform Achamana and pray to your Guru and Deity for their blessings.
3.
Close the left nostril and exhale completely through right nostril chanting “OM” “OM”, ” OM”mentally.
4.
Inhale through the same nostril chanting “OM”,”OM” ,”OM” and incline the head slowly a little backwards.
5.
Inhale again straighten the head retaining the breath and chant “OM NAMASHIVAYA” focusing your mind at the TRUKUTI.
6.
Continue chanting “OM NAMASHIVAYA” for five times retaining the breath.
7.
Close the right nostril and exhale completely through the left nostril chanting “OM”, “OM”, “OM” mentally.
8.
Repeat No.5 and 6.
9.
All the above is considered one cycle. Meditate at the Trukuti for five minutes.
10.
Repeat from No.1 to 8 again for 5 cycles.
11.
Close the left nostril and exhale through the right nostril chanting “OM, “OM”, “OM” mentally.
Inhale through the right nostril chanting “OM” and exhale through the left nostril chanting “OM” closing the right nostril.
12.
Inhale the breath through the left nostril chanting “OM” closing the right nostril and the exhale through the right nostril chanting OM” closing the left nostril.
13.
Repeat the No.11 and 12 for five times.

POORANA NADI SUDDHI KUMBAKA PRANAYAMA (Through the Left Nostril)

Procedure:

1.
Again repeat the above from No. 1 to 9 starting from the left nostril for five cycles.
2. Repeat the above No.11 and 12 for five times.

Note: The words “OM NAMASIVAYA” may substituted by “OM GANESHA”, “OM MURUGA”, “OM SAKTHI” or your Guru’s name followed by “OM”.

03. Application of Vibuthi

a) Take the vibuthi and put in your left palm
b) Place your left palm on your right thigh. ( close to knee )
c) Take 3 drops of water from the panchapateram and pour into the vibuthi of the left palm. Chant ” OM SIVA ” for each drop three times.
d) Close the left palm with the right palm. Chant “SIVA” three times.
e) Mix vibuthi using both palm by rubbing.
f) After mixing use your ring finger to write the word ” OM “

04. Application of Vibuthi On Head

Placing your hand as in diagram, Chant ” OM ESAYEHNAH MOORTHIAYEH NAMAHA three times.

05. Application of Vibuthi On Forehead

Apply vibuthi and chant ” OM SATHPURUCHA VASTHRAYA NAMAHA ” three times.

06. Application of Vibuthi On Chest

Apply vibuthi and chant ” OM AKGOHREH ERUTHIYAGEH NAMAHA ” three times.

07. Application of Vibuthi On Navel

Apply vibuthi and chant ” OM VAMATHEVHA QUIYAEH NAMAHA ” three times.

08. Application of Vibuthi On Upper Arm

Cross both hands to apply vibuthi i.e. Right hand to apply on Left sides and Left hand to apply on Right sides.
Chant ” OM SATYOH SADAYEH NAMAHA “.

09. Application of Vibuthi On Elbow

Cross both hands to apply vibuthi i.e. Right hand to apply on Left sides and Left hand to apply on Right sides.
Chant ” OM SATYOH SADAYEH NAMAHA “.

10. Application of Vibuthi On Wrist

Cross both hands to apply vibuthi i.e. Right hand to apply on Left sides and Left hand to apply on Right sides.

16. Rinse the vibuthi into the panchapateram

17. Join thumb with middle and ring finger. Dip into panchapateram to consume water, chanting ” SIVA ” three times.
