Aum or Om

Om or Aum is a sacred word. Om is the symbol of God or Brahman in Hinduism. Aum is the primary or mula mantra. The world exists in Om and dissolves in Om. Om is a sound basis of all sounds. Om denotes Sat-Chit-Ananda. All the words and objects are denoted by sounds and all sounds merge in Omkara. The Gayatri mantra merges in the great ocean of Omkara.

Om is used before most of the Mantras, Deities ,the names of Gurus and Swamis. Every Upanishad begins with OM, Trisati 300 and Sahasara 1000. The oblations that are offered to the various Gods are preceded by the chanting of OM. Om is used in Gayatri mantra and Ashtottara Shata Namavalli – 108 names of Lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga, Lord Siva, Goddess Parvathi or Sakti and Lord Vishnu.
